Restriction in drinking water supply may be relaxed With good inflow into Periyar and Vaigai dams in the last 24 hours ending Wednesday, the restriction, now in force, in the distribution of potable water to residents may be relaxed soon. After the summer season was on, the district administration and the Corporation of Madurai had restricted water supply to once in four days. The arrangement came into force since March 23. However, with good amount of rainfall recorded in the catchment areas of Periyar and Vaigai reservoirs in the last couple of days, things had improved, said Collector L. Subramanian.
In fact, the restriction in water distribution had enabled conservation of water by over 7 feet in the Vaigai dam when compared to last season. The inflow into Periyar dam on Tuesday evening was 150 cusecs, which had doubled to 336 cusecs on Wednesday evening. Similarly, from 81 cusecs, it had gone up to 104 cusecs in Vaigai dam in the last 24 hours. The rainfall too had been good in the catchment areas and other neighbouring locations. He said, “If this trend of rain continues for the next couple of days without much rise in mercury, then the officials shall certainly review the position and consider bringing down the number of days from four to three, as the case may be, in water supply.”
PWD officials said that storage in the Vaigai dam had been comfortable this season, when compared with the corresponding period last year, only because of the restriction in distribution. Till the summer started, residents of Madurai Corporation area received water once in two days. The weather forecast for Thursday is that there will be moderate rain and thunder showers in parts of Madurai region. For most of the part of the day, the sky will remain cloudy, with humid afternoon. As a part of the Chithirai festival, Lord Kallazhagar would enter the Vaigai on May 4.The quantum of water to be released in the river would be made known soon, the officials said
